Monday 9/19/11 – 2011/2012 Broadcast Season Begins

Two and a Half Men 2.0 and 2 Broke Girls Newbie Deliver, DWTS Decent, Sing-Off and Playboy Club Flounder

Fueling CBS to rank #1 for the night among A18-49, the Two and a Half Men 9pm season opener, introducing Ashton Kutcher to the cast, got off to an amazing start, earning an 8.3 A18-49 Live Rtg and receiving significant sampling last night, more than doubling last year’s season 8 premiere benchmark (+104%). Following Two and a Half Men, CBS' debut of 2 Broke Girls at 9:30pm took advantage of its much hyped lead-in, retaining 73% of its audience (6.0 A18-49 Rtg) and growing 76% from the network's premiere of Mike and Molly last year. Last night's success on CBS all began with How I Met Your Mother's season 7 premiere at 8pm, which posted a solid 3.4 A18-49 Rtg, up a hefty 35% from its year ago opener. A second new episode followed at 8:30p, growing 18% from its lead-in as anticipation of the Two and a Half Men premiere heightened. The 10pm hour on CBS was the only weak spot for the network as the Hawaii 5-0 sophomore opener (2.9 A18-49 Rtg) lost half of its 2 Broke Girls lead-in, while also declining 17% from last year's debut. However, the series still captured the largest audience in the time period.

Hurt by CBS' momentum, the two-hour season 13 premiere of Dancing with the Stars on ABC still earned a respectable 3.4 A18-49 Rtg, though declined 21% from the season 11 fall opener on 9/20/10. In comparison, ABC's Castle season 4 premiere experienced the opposite trend, growing a healthy 12% from last year (2.7 A18-49 Rtg)

With heavy competition, NBC’s two hour Sing-Off premiere did not deliver (1.6 A18-49 Rtg), averaging smaller A18-49 audiences than year ago’s combined Chuck and The Event premiere rating. Leading out of the Sing-Off, NBC’s Playboy Club debut garnered a 1.4 A18-49 Rtg, down 32% from last year's Chase debut and dropping the network to #3 in the 10pm time period behind Hawaii 5-0 and Castle.
