Programming Buzz from Zenith: Friday 9/23/11 – CBS, FOX and CW Premiere Friday Line-Ups

Friday 9/23/11 – CBS, FOX and CW Premiere Friday Line-Ups

With the night belonging to CBS on A18-49, the network’s newest drama, A Gifted Man, debuted at 8pm and posted a respectable Friday night 1.3 A18-49 Live Rtg, growing from last fall’s Medium premiere by 13%. Up three-tenths out of its lead-in, CSI: NY was off 5% from the year ago opener, while the Blue Bloods season 2 premiere lost 7% of its A18-49 audience versus last year.

Looking to generate extra sampling, NBC began its line-up with repeats of comedies Up All Night and Whitney, followed by a two-hour premiere of Dateline, which improved by 19% across A18-49 from its year ago performance.

Over on FOX, season openers of Kitchen Nightmares and the recently moved Fringe both fell by double-digit percentages from their respective premieres last year (1/21/11 and 9/23/10). However, Fringe was able to improve over the year ago time period’s dismal Good Guys by 41%.

Ending an evening of repeats on ABC (Modern Family and Revenge), a new 20/20 was off a tenth of a rating point with A18-49, while premieres of Nikita and Supernatural on The CW deteriorated from year ago benchmarks. Unable to benefit from the strength of its Vampire Diaries last season, the network shifted Nikita to anchor Friday, though the program was unable to sustain ratings of the recently departed CW favorite, Smallville, losing half of its audience from a year ago. With a weaker lead-in, the 7th season premiere of Supernatural at 9pm declined 38% among A18-49 from its previous opener on 9/24/10.
