FT.com / Comment / Opinion - Canal Plus plays a cool hand with free digital channel

The French have taken to watching poker on late night television in a big way, but the biggest game of all is currently being played out by the country’s commercial television channels themselves along with the government, the broadcast regulator and the European Commission.
The stakes are high, judging from the political noise this poker match is provoking as France prepares to complete its analogue switchover to digital terrestrial television. And the sharpest player around the table once again seems to be Canal Plus, the pay-TV operator 80 per cent-owned by entertainment and telecoms conglomerate Vivendi.
